How to stand up to “hate speech” on the internet?
Tuesday, 7 March at 5 pm, Children’s cultural centre, Takovska 8
Research shows that Youtube is more popular with youth than any TV channel. The success of the platform is closely tied to the fact that it is easily accessible to both users and content creators and that it enables immediate communication between them. However, these interactions do not involve only an exchange of knowledge or entertainment but they also have their unpleasant side, articulated through those who are commonly known as “haters”.
The conference “How to stand up to hate speech on the internet?” is designed as an event based on a peculiar form of peer education. Four young Youtubers, Vanja Veljic, Nemanja Arsic, Nina Prodanovic and Dusan Sakic will share their experiences of digital violence with high school students from Belgrade. Ana Mirkovic, the executive director of the Digital Communications Institute and UNICEF consultant will contextualise Youtubers’ testimonies and provide recommendations for preventing and dealing with this disturbing phenomenon.
